A strict set of federal regulations developed to contain
rising hospital costs. Coupled with the increase in the older population
and the demand for specialized services, America's healthcare system turned
into a competitive industry. Rather than resist change, the Institute
adapted to it, assigning teams of professionals to specific clinical areas.
This restructuring gave rise to new "Centers of Excellence"
in spinal cord and traumatic brain injury, pain management, amputee and
stroke services. These changes helped the hospital deliver more specialized
services to patients with specific disabilities.
This decade also marked a period of unprecedented expansion for the Institute
as it opened four additional facilities and experienced a dramatic spurt
of growth from 78 to 230 beds. The expansion reaffirmed the Institute's
leading position within rehabilitation as well as Dr. Kessler's commitment
to serving people with disabilities throughout Northern New Jersey.
