Under the clinical management of its new Medical Director,
Richard A. Sullivan, M.D., the Institute launched the decade with plans
for major expansion. By adding a separate outpatient facility and 28 beds,
the once modest hospital assumed the look of a modern rehabilitation center.
The Institute positioned itself as a leader not only in clinical care
for people with disabilities, but also in research and education. By 1975,
the Institute established a residency training program in physical medicine
and rehabilitation for physicians through a new affiliation with the University
of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ).
The decade ended on a sad note with the passing of Dr. Kessler and Mr.
Page. The 1970's, however, confirmed the Institute's ability to withstand
the pressures of growth and adapt to a healthcare industry that was rapidly
changing.
